Video game logic and anime logic collide with your rapidly accelerating truck, along with hapless bystanders, inanimate objects, and unwary cop cars. Truck-kun is Supporting Me from Another World?! is exactly as chaotic as its name would suggest and it’s a wonderful way to spend your time.
Our heroine is Carissa Ward. She’s a go-getting, morally grey, business woman who just got the promotion of her dreams. Starting Monday, she’ll be the vice president of marketing. It looks like it’s all coming up aces.
Enter me. An unnamed driver zooming around in a delivery truck just trying to get through the day. In one of the funniest tragic car crashes to ever take up my screen, the anonymous blue collar worker slams right into the dream-achieving, soon-to-be executive. Now she’ll never see that corner office she worked so hard for.
The game’s tone is Strange Scaffold’s signature. Everything’s outrageous, but almost no one in the virtual world acknowledges that. One of the biggest laughs the early part of the game earned from me in comes just after Carissa’s death. The recognizable voice of Strange Scaffold creative director, Xalavier Nelson Jr. booms out of the silhouette of a background character shouting, “No! She was so young and smart and conventionally attractive!” The tongue-in-cheek nod to tropes used in both the gaming and anime space is clever, critical, and most importantly, funny.
Continuing that theme, while the driver freaks out over his role in another human beings death, Carissa’s voice hits him. It turns out, she’s not dead. Not exactly. The truck just so happens to be magical (no follow-up questions needed) and at the moment she was struck, Carissa was transported to a fantasy anime world. Of course, she now sports pink hair, long ears, and a serious suit of armor.
As her murderer, you now owe her a spirit debt, which she asks to be paid back immediately. She demands you go on a rampage mowing down even more people to send them to her world as monsters. By defeating the car-hit hordes, she can earn star points that allow her to challenge the ultimate baddie in her world.
Success guarantees her the legendary resurrection scroll. In perfectly pleasing logic, the scroll will bring her (and possibly everyone you’ve killed after) back to life.
If that wasn’t enough to juggle, she needs enough star points to get back before her promotion begins on Monday. So, you’ll be spending your weekend furiously driving over everything in sight to accomplish this.
The narrative set up is a wonderful blend of fanciful, humorous, and head-shaking. But the driving is no joke. It’s hard to put the controller down as I careen through a city purpose-built to be both enticing to explore and destroy. The moment-to-moment action is satisfying and its levity lightens my soul.
Variation is the key to keeping the player behind the wheel. I was happy to not I never got bogged down with one-note gameplay. My ability to drift, boost into special objects, sideswipe chasing authorities, or effortlessly turn 360 to launch off a speed ramp keeps me engaged. As does the constant stream of dopamine flooding my brain as I hit goals like delivering packages, absolutely flattening a neighborhood’s neatly trimmed shrubberies, and triggering Carissa’s ultimate attack.
The entire time, I have to keep in mind that Carissa needs me to send her unsuspecting victims to heroically cut down. So I always have an eye out for pedestrians. The loop never gives me time to think beyond my next move. It’s invigorating. It’s ridiculous.
Truck-kun is Supporting Me from Another World?! is a short drive, taking only around three or four hours to complete. And the time rolls past in a flash as all my senses are locked into accomplishing high-speed, constantly evolving objectives.
I sat down for what I thought was about twenty minutes to play only to discover I had put well over an hour into the game. I’m eager to see what the boss battle looks like for this wild ride.
