It is certainly not the first time I’ve found myself agonizing over picking just one game for an event’s “Best In Show.” In fact, with how many amazing and varied indies there are, it’s becoming nearly impossible. However, I noticed something about all my top contenders at PAX West this year: All my favorite experiences were unsettling. That’s right, despite my known hesitiency for the deep end of the indie horror scene, I had the best time this year with games luring me further into the water. Here are the games that made waves at this month’s show.
Inkblood
Inkblood is one of the few instances at PAX West this year where I knew of the game beforehand and knew I needed to play it. This macabre investigation title hits that Golden Idol cord while maintaining its own, uniquely bizarre, identity.

Trainwatch
My enthusiasm for Trainwatch manifested in an unusual treat: A same-day PAX preview. I later enjoyed talking with with someone who read it and then played the preview themselves. They weren’t prepared for where the demo went, as I left out a few key twists.
Crop
The cozy-creepy genre continues to grow in the furtile, corpse-fed soil of this farming sim title. Why was I trapped in a car trunk? How did I come to bury a stranger? Why is starting up a farm so satisfying?
