When the team reached out to me with the opportunity to experience Mr. Records again, I didn’t hesitate. And you shouldn’t either, considering the demo is up on Steam today and ready for you to play your heart out. It’s well worth the time and the build is very nearly the same hands-on shown off at Summer Game Fest.
I’m sorry to report that my previous encounter with the musical adventure has not made me any better at it. I played through each radically different and ear-catching album on the easiest setting, and didn’t bother to step foot into the realm of more intense difficulties. Though, I suspect more musically gifted players than me will enjoy the progression. I, on the other hand, appreciate being able to both participate and soak in the glorious artistic elements.
There were some small shifts from what I played over the summer. Mainly, these consisted of tweaks to dialogue, like when a customer asks for a record I then have to find. The descriptions this time around seemed a little more user-friendly, with images and big hints. The experience itself for me was different as, without the time pressure of an appointment, I spent more time giving Buzz, my faithful furry companion plenty of pets.

However, this most recent build had one major new component: A new musical mechanic. My poor brain took some time to adjust to this one, but in a previously unseen album, I got a bomb thrown at me. That’s not a metaphor.
Alongside jumping, kicking, and sliding, players will also have to pick up a giant cartoon bomb mid-run and toss it away with the controller’s trigger button when its countdown reaches zero.
Besides the complexity the bombs introduce, they also allow for some spectacular visuals – exploding across the landscape’s sky in brilliant bursts of color. It’s a snappy addition to the wonderfully imaginative levels and I can’t wait to see how it gets implemented in Mr. Record‘s future levels.
