While not overflowing with indie news, Keighley’s Opening Night Live had a few bright bursts hiding within the show’s long runtime. We got brand new project reveals from beloved teams, much-anticipated launch dates, and fresh looks at indies coming in the near future.
This has long been on my wishlist for a showcase reveal, and ONL finally made it happen. In case you weren’t aware, this sequel has an attention-grabbing lineage, with Daniel Mullins, creator of Inscryption, behind it. Then you get a look at the game itself and I couldn’t be more ready (and a bit scared) to jump in. So, it’s a good thing we got a release date: April 27, 2027.
Pony Island 2: Panda Circus is a phantasmagorical voyage through time, myth, divinity, and video games. Escape the lordly deities of the underworld with your soul, and your sanity, intact. This is not a game about ponies.
We’ve seen this game a time or two, but I never get tired of looking. That’s fortunate, since this easy-on-the-eyes title has so far been the strong silent type, offering very little detail on what it’s all about or when we can expect it.
Explore, listen, and unravel a hidden language buried in stone and sound. An exploration puzzle adventure set across vast brutalist landscapes shaped by deep time ages.
The October 13 release date isn’t new information, but I never mind seeing a little bit more of the Napoleonic souls game. This time, we got a few snatches of the more magical powers players can wield as the game progresses. As cool as they are, it also looks like casting is a painful process.
Valor Mortis is a first-person action soulslike from the creators of Ghostrunner. Rise from death as a former soldier of Napoleon’s army. Wield supernatural powers, battle horrifying monsters, and unravel a conspiracy that threatens all of humanity.
Murals’ reveal is the kind of moment we watch showcases for. Made and published by Dlala Studios, the devs behind Disney Illusion Island, Murals looks like a promising, vibrant adventure. It’s currently slated to hit sometime next year, so keep an eye out for more details in the future.
These are not the tales you were told. Express yourself through stylized combat in the hand-painted worlds of Murals, a twisted isometric action-adventure where fairytales have gone spectacularly wrong.
Joining the exciting list of “games brought to you from the creators of,” Acornia is a wild new project being developed by Splashteam, the devs responsible for indie darling Tinykin. This new project keeps the 2D/3D visuals, but features a very different gameplay loop. Much like Moonlighter, players will need to fight through hostile levels in order to return to their treetop dessert shop to sell the spoils. Of course, because you are a squirrel, all the treats you bring back get stored in your cheeks before you spit them out for hungry patrons.
Acornia: Mirror Worlds is a bake-and-brawl management adventure game! Run your shop in one dimension, fight angry spirits in the other. Your special skill? Stuffing your bottomless cheek pouches with treats – to plate up or shoot up enemies!
ONL’s preshow had a surprising amount of fire. One of the biggest highlights was a new look and launch date reveal for Mariachi Legends. This has long been one where I don’t need to see any more; I just want to play. And its date may look familiar because it’s April 27, 2027 — the same as Pony Island 2. So. That’s going to be a busy day.
Mariachi Legends is a brutal, pixel art, combat-oriented Metroidvania set in the heart of Mexico. You play as Pablo Cruz, a detective who has agreed to a deal with Death herself. She has given Pablo the ability to transform into the mighty La Sombra allowing him to fight back against evil.
