The acclaimed typing-based dungeon crawler Cryptmaster is heading to consoles next month. After testing the vocabularies of PC players in May, PlayStation and Xbox users get to type their first words in this darkly comedic adventure on October 3.
It’s always great to see cool games reach a broader audience, and Cryptmaster stands as one of the most memorable PC releases of the year. This first-person dungeon crawler sees players awaken in the underworld as a party of resurrected adventurers. Returning to the surface means heeding the commands/advice of the mysterious Cryptmaster, a ghoulish and chatty companion.

Interactions are performed by typing out words, offering a freeform method of chatting with the bizarre NPCs, including shady rats and an overly dignified goddess. The game’s impressively large database of reactions to the myriad of (likely dumb) player responses makes it a thrill to experiment with. Dungeon battles involve recalling and typing the names of forgotten attacks, and can evolve into an entertaining exercise of typing commands while managing cooldowns. Although I believe Cryptmaster is best played with a keyboard, a controller offers a fine alternative for those making their first trek on console. You can learn more about what the adventure entails in our hands-on preview.
Cryptmaster will be available on current and last-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
