“We have amazing for you all,” declares Double Fine Productions’ Tim Schafer in an attention-grabbing recorded announcement. “As of this moment, Day of the Devs is a one-hundred percent, independent non-profit entity.” You can hear this from the man himself, after the initial sketch opening, by watching the video below.
And the newly minted non-profit is celebrating by kicking off its first Day of the Devs fundraiser. The long-running show is one of my absolute favorite indie events. Not only because it started right here in the Bay Area, but also because the games are curated exquisitely, the production values are incredible, and the entire event is free for devs and attendees alike.
There’s nothing quite like it, and it’s well worth supporting if you are so inclined. And you might be just that much more inclined after learning the team is offering codes to games like Birth — whose creator just landed on Xbox’s 30 under 30 list — Sea of Stars, Toem, Venba, Oxenfree, Bugsnax, Return of the Obra Dinn, and dozens more to anyone who contributes one hundred dollars. For two hundred and fifty, you can nab some cozy socks.

Eagle-eyed readers might notice the donation page also drops some news on Day of the Devs’ future. In 2024, indie fans are getting three separate chances to attend the spotlighting show. The year’s first takes place in San Francisco in March. June will see the event in LA for a collaboration with Summer Game Fest. And Day of the Devs will round out the year with a wintery showcase in December running alongside The Game Awards.
Anyone in the Bay on March 17 — which conveniently lines up with the Game Developers Conference’s dates — can pick up tickets for the free, in-person soirée. As an added treat, the team is also having a ticketed get-together at SFMOMA the following day.
As a reminder to all the indie developers out there, the March show is accepting game submissions until February 2, which is Friday! So, send in your indie’s info as soon as you can.
