The Game Awards have come and gone, with Geoff Keighley’s yearly celebration of video games delivering plenty of world premiere trailers and handing out a slew of awards to games across the industry. Indie developers and their games are no small part of the industry and have been given their flowers alongside the best of the triple-A games. Four categories this year have independent game representation, including Best Debut Indie Game and the much-discussed Best Independent Game.
Here are the incredible games that won each category at The Game Awards that an indie was honored with a nomination:

Games For Impact Winner – Tchia
Awaceb’s sandbox adventure is a colorful, fun, and surprising adventure from start to finish. Congrats to the developers for receiving the Games For Impact award for 2023; it’s extremely well deserved. Read our review of Tchia here.

Best RPG Winner – Baldur’s Gate 3
Unless you’ve lived under a rock for the last few months, there has been no escaping the gravitational force of Baldur’s Gate 3. The ageless property of Dungeons and Dragons has been in immaculate hands with the RPG powerhouse team at Larian taking the reigns of this storied franchise. What can we say? Baldur’s Gate 3 is an exceptional game that easily stands with the best of the year, if not the decade thus far, and Larian deserves to be recognized for rolling a natural 20 on this game (with a ton of stat modifiers on top of that). Along with Best RPG, Baldur’s Gate 3 took home Best Performance, Best Multiplayer, Community Support, Player’s Voice, and the coveted prize of Game of the Year. Congrats to Larian Studios on cleaning up at The Game Awards.

Best Debut Indie Game Winner – Cocoon
Cocoon wowed us earlier this year and aparently was just as impressive to The Game Awards’ jury and voters at home. This world-hopping game is a masterclass in brain-straining puzzles and deserves every bit of love it received with this award. Read our review of Cocoon here.

Best Independent Game Winner – Sea Of Stars
We’re just happy Garl got some recognition this year. Congratulations to the Sabotage Studio team on taking home the Best Independent Game this year. If you haven’t checked out our Sea of Stars review, put your eyes on those carefully written words and score.
