During today’s inaugural Triple-I Showcase from The Triple-I Initiative, Red Hook Studios unveiled a new way to play Darkest Dungeon II (or double-I to stay on brand with the event), a new mode called Kingdoms coming later in 2024.
Separate from Darkest Dungeon II’s OG mode called Confessions, Kingdoms still brings the constant dread the series is known for, but with a different flavor. Kingdoms will task players with weeding out calamitous creatures and minions of evil within a connected web of inns that comprise the titular Kingdom. Three new factions of enemies are being introduced, including The Coven, the Beastmen, and The Crimson Courtiers.
To take on the new threats within Kingdoms, you’ll be able to upgrade your characters and the inns themselves by gathering and allocating resources to progress through what Red Hook calls “extensive upgrade trees.”

While we have to wait until later this year to get our hands on Darkest Dungeon II’s Kingdom mode, you won’t have to prepare for a mortal strike to your wallet. The robust update is planned to be available free of charge to anyone who owns Darkest Dungeon II on PC.
